Medronho: the Algarve's spirit, and where it is really distilled

Updated September 17, 2026 · 5 min read

A waterfall dropping into a green pool between red rock faces in the hills inland from Tavira

Medronho is the one drink the Algarve makes that has no equivalent anywhere else, and almost every visitor first meets it as a small glass placed on the table after dinner without being ordered. It is distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree, Arbutus unedo, which grows wild in the hills rather than being farmed on a plain.

Two things about it surprise people. The first is that it is not a Monchique monopoly, whatever the west of the region will tell you. The second is that you cannot book a distillery visit from Tavira — not through our catalogue, and not easily by any other route.

Tavira is inside the protected area

The Medronho do Algarve protected geographical indication lists its production area municipality by municipality, and the eastern Algarve is in it. Tavira, Castro Marim and Alcoutim appear with named parishes; São Brás de Alportel and Loulé appear in full.

So does Monchique, and so do Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Silves, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira’s Paderne and part of Faro, along with three Alentejo municipalities. The IGP is a regional designation, not a village one.

That matters for what you buy. A bottle sold as Medronho do Algarve IGP has met a specification; the specification calls for fermented strawberry-tree fruit or its must, distillation in copper stills, and — where the spirit is aged — oak or chestnut casks with a light toast. The official description records lower methanol, total acidity and ethyl acetate than ordinary medronho brandy, which is a technical way of saying that the designation exists partly to distinguish careful production from the other kind.

Monchique is where the visiting happens

The movement to bring distilleries into the legal system began in Monchique, and the initiative that created the IGP came from there too. That head start shows in the visitor offer.

The Rota das Destilas, set up by the parish council of Alferce, runs a full-day route taking in three or four local distilleries, opening with a traditional breakfast of hot bread, tiborna and medronho. Casa do Medronho, a project of the Marmelete parish council, offers a route through licensed distilleries in the same area.

Monchique is at the far western end of the Algarve. From Tavira that is a serious drive each way, and a day trip built around it will be mostly road. We are not going to pretend otherwise in order to fill a gap in the eastern listings.

What the eastern hills actually give you

The Serra do Caldeirão behind Tavira is medronho country in the sense that the trees grow there and the fruit is picked there. What it does not have, as far as we can establish, is a distillery with a booking page and a visitor programme.

No activity in our Tavira catalogue is a medronho distillery tour. The closest thing is tour 1323695, an Algarve 4×4 jeep safari that runs from Olhão into the mountains and waterfalls inland of Tavira — €55 per person for a day, rated 4.9 from 261 reviews in our snapshot of 17 September 2026. It shows you the landscape the fruit comes from. It is not a distillery visit and does not claim to be.

Tour 1377832, an open-roof jeep trip at €42.50 for four hours with a 4.9 rating from 20 reviews, describes tastings at a traditional organic farm. What is poured is not specified in the description, so ask rather than assume medronho is on the list.

Buying it, and the part that needs care

Tavira’s own tourist board lists aguardente de medronho among the town’s traditional products, alongside aguardente de figo — fig spirit, which is the other local distillate and worth trying in its own right. Both turn up in the municipal market and in speciality shops.

Look for a label. Home-distilled medronho circulates informally throughout the region, often in unmarked bottles and often offered generously, and its strength and composition are unknown to you. The IGP specification exists precisely because the unregulated product varies. We are not going to tell you what to drink, but we will say that an unlabelled bottle from a stranger is a different proposition from a bottle that names its producer, and that anything with a medical dimension belongs with a pharmacist rather than with us.

It is a strong spirit. Treat the small after-dinner glass as the local measure it is, and do not plan to drive afterwards.

Is it worth a day?

If you are already going west — to Monchique, Silves or the hills behind Portimão — the distillery routes are a genuinely good use of a morning, and the Alferce breakfast is the kind of thing people remember longer than a beach.

If your week is based in Tavira, our honest answer is no. Buy a labelled bottle here, take the jeep route into the Serra do Caldeirão for the landscape if you want it, and spend the driving day on something closer. The eastern Algarve overview sets out what that could be, and the things to do around Tavira page lists what is actually bookable from here.

The tours travellers book most

Dolphin Watching from Cabanas de Tavira

Dolphin Watching from Cabanas de Tavira

⏱ 2.5 h · 2.5 h · out to open sea

3.6 (104 reviews)

The only dolphin trip in the whole Tavira catalogue, and it rates 3.6 – lower than anything else on this page. It has to cross the lagoon before it reaches open water, which eats into the time with the animals. If dolphins are the reason for your holiday, the western Algarve fleets are the stronger bet.
