Tavira Old Town Tours

Tavira has a castle, a bridge over the Gilão and more churches than a town this size has any business keeping. It is also built on a slope with cobbles, which is why the tuk-tuk and the little tourist train sell as well as the walking tours. Prices start at €7 for the train – the cheapest guided thing in the whole catalogue.

Good to know: The bridge is signposted as Roman and it is not: the arches you walk over are medieval, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. It is a good bridge and an old one. It is not Roman, and a guide who tells you otherwise has not read the plaque either.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to the island beaches?

By ferry, and it is cheap: from Quatro Águas outside town the crossing to Ilha de Tavira takes under ten minutes and costs roughly €2 return; from the town quay it is a little longer and slightly dearer. Praia do Barril is reached differently – you park at Pedras d’el Rei, then walk the causeway or take the little train for about €2 each way. Ferries run hourly in winter and far more often in July and August; the current timetable is on the board at the pier.

Can I visit the Benagil Cave from Tavira?

Not by boat from here. Benagil is about 84 km west, roughly an hour on the A22, and every boat and kayak tour into the cave leaves from Portimão, Lagos, Albufeira or Carvoeiro. One operator does run a guided hike along the Benagil cliffs starting in Tavira, but that is a coast walk, not a cave trip. If the cave is the main reason for your holiday, base yourself further west.

Do I need a car?

Not for Tavira itself – the old town, the market, the ferry pier and the station are all walkable. You need one for the salt pans, the hill country and the villages east of here, or you book a tour that includes the transport. Faro airport is about 38 km away, half an hour by road. There is no station at the airport: the train runs to Faro town, and you cover the last stretch by bus or taxi.

When are the flamingos in the salt pans?

All year, but not in the same numbers. Autumn and spring are the strongest because of migration; high summer is the thinnest. Early morning and late afternoon are the best hours, and the pans are worked commercially, so some basins are drained while others are full. Nobody can promise you a bird.

Is Tavira a good place with children?

For beach days, yes: the island beaches are sheltered by the sandbanks, the water is shallow and warm, and the ferry ride is itself an outing. What Tavira does not have is a water park, a zoo or a go-kart track – the nearest of those are in the central Algarve, an hour or more away by car. The town also sits on a slope with cobbles, which is worth knowing if you are pushing a buggy.

How far ahead should I book?

Further ahead than the size of the town suggests. There are only around two dozen bookable tours here and most run in small groups a few times a week, so a full boat is a real possibility in summer even midweek. Most listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before – check that on the booking page, because it is per operator, not a rule.
