RIA FORMOSA
Its a lagoon system that extends from the Beach of Manta Rota and includes a wide variety of habitats: islands, marshes, sand dunes, salt marshes, freshwater ponds and waterways, farmland and forests.
Extends to the municipalities of Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António and covers an area of about 18,400 hectares along 60 km from the hip to Manta Rota.
South is protected from the ocean by dunes almost parallel to the continental edge, formed by two peninsulas (Faro peninsula that encompasses the beach and the beach Ancão Faro Cacela Peninsula and encompassing the beach of Manta Rota) and five sandy islands (Barreta , Farol , Armona, Tavira and Cabanas) that protect a vast area of marshland, canals and islets.

Ria Formosa is characterized by sandy coastal dunes (beaches and dunes) that protects a lagoon . A portion of the lagoon system is permanently submerged, while a significant percentage emerges during low tide. The average depth of the lagoon is 2 m.
